Twenty-five years ago, the Human Genome Project released the first draft of the human genome sequence, a moonshot accomplishment that UC Santa Cruz played a heroic role in getting over the finish line. It is also the anniversary of the UC Santa Cruz Genome Browser, one of the most widely used resources for genomics worldwide. Originally built to allow researchers to explore a single human DNA sequence, it is now accessed by over 170,000 distinct global users per month to visualize, annotate, and study genomes of thousands of different species from humans to viruses.

We are celebrating these milestones and the tremendous impact that they have had on our planet with a half-day symposium about the exciting future of genomics in medicine and conservation. Please join us at the Seymour Center La Feliz room from 2-5:30pm for a stimulating discussion, presentations, and live demos!

Dr.  Euan Ashley, Chair of Stanford University's Department of Medicine, will be giving the keynote address on the history of the genome in medicine, touching on its use for patients with rare and undiagnosed diseases.

He will discuss the Undiagnosed Disease Network and its mission to solve mysteries of undiagnosed diseases using genomic technology. He will discuss patients admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and their teams’ efforts to speed up the delivery of genomic information to the patients most in need. Finally, he will look ahead to a future where a genome is available to every patient who wants it and delivering precision medicine to those most in need.

Full schedule:

2:00pm: Welcome and opening remarks by Chancellor Cynthia Larive, Dean Alex Wolf, and Genomics Institute Scientific Director David Haussler

2:30pm: Keynote address by Euan Ashley

3:30pm: Panel discussion featuring Euan Ashley and UCSC Genomics Institute faculty members specializing in different areas of health and conservation genomics
