Amah Mutsun Speaker Series: Indigenous Artists in the California Missions

Join the American Indian Resource Center for our 20th Amah Mutsun Speaker Series Event with guest speaker Dr. Yve Chavez.
California Indian artists were vital to the artistic and architectural development of California's Franciscan missions, yet their contributions remain overshadowed by a nostalgia for a mythical Spanish past. Through her original research on missions within the Tongva and Chumash regions of southern California, Dr. Chavez presents an Indigenous reading of Native dances, stone sculpting, basket weaving, and architecture within these contested spaces. "Indigenous Artists in the California Missions" brings to light the artistic achievements and resilience of California's first peoples who strove to preserve their cultural knowledge in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
