Highlighting Mentors, Role Models for UCSC African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) Students

Santa Cruz, CA - R.PAATH will present the first annual Celebrating Black Futures Brunch at the Stevenson Event Center on February 18, 2023, at 11:00 AM and feature special guests, a private film screening, and an awards reception.

R.PAATH is proud to bring the Celebrating Black Futures Brunch to Stevenson College for the first time. The Celebrating Black Futures Brunch will be welcoming keynote speaker Mohamed “Mo” Fofana, a private screening of “Soul on Ice: Past, Present, & Future (2015) and awards reception as a means of identifying UCSC  students, staff, and organizations, and community members who left an impact on the ABC community this year and as a celebration of their achievements. 

Mohamed “Mo” Fofana was born in the Ivory Coast, west Africa, and raised in Memphis, TN. Mo is currently a ticket sales account manager for the San Jose Sharks and an artist. Mo created the first artwork for the San Jose Sharks' celebration of Juneteenth in June 2020 and designed the Sharks' first Black History Month jersey worn during pre-game in February 2021. Mo also hosts the Teal For Change podcast, which aims to expand the San Jose Sharks organization's efforts in support of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice, both within the organization and throughout the Bay Area community.

Soul On Ice: Past, Present & Future (2015) is the rarely-told story of black players in hockey, a sport is often seen as predominately white. At the heart of the film is Jaden Lindo, a young man pursuing his lifelong dream to play in the NHL, accompanied by interviews with P.K. Subban, Wayne Simmonds, Anson Carter, Joel Ward, Trevor Daley, Tony McKegney, five-time Stanley Cup winner Grant Fuhr, and more.

Lastly, the following awards will be presented:

  • Outstanding peer mentor and role model
  • Outstanding staff or office
  • Outstanding student staff
  • Outstanding student organization event or program
  • Inspirational graduating peer and student leader
  • Excellence in community engagement

Following the event, residents of R.PAATH and other ABC residential communities will attend the San Jose Sharks Black History Month Game versus the Buffalo Sabres. Approximately 50 students will be shuttled from the Stevenson College Circle to the SAP Center in San Jose to enjoy the game.
