Community Studies: "Urgent and Compelling"
Community Studies has been called "urgent and compelling" for its unwavering commitment to connecting students with social justice work in community organizations through a distinctive academic pedagogy.
Founded in 1969, Community Studies is the oldest inter-disciplinary program at UC Santa Cruz and was born during a moment of profound intellectual ferment that gave rise to other innovative campus initiatives like the legendary History of Consciousness doctoral program. In addition to its role in defining the founding spirit of the campus, Community Studies was also a national pioneer in the field of experiential education. Community Studies was also an academic program pioneer in addressing principles of social justice, specifically inequities arising from race, class and gender dynamics in society at large, and in critically assessing strategies for achieving social change.
Over the 40+ years since its founding, the Community Studies program has changed as the platforms and needs for social justice work have changed in the wider world. Our core commitments have remained intact and, arguably, are in more demand than ever.
This event showcases the Program's continuing vitality and enduring significance through student-produced posters featuring field study work; students will be present to discuss their projects. At 3:00 PM, our Program Director will convene a conversation with visiting alumni about current initiatives and future opportunities for collaboration between Community Studies alumni and students. We hope you, our remarkable alumni, will join us for a lively conversation and, as always, to inspire and provoke each other, our current students and our communities-at-large!
Light refreshments will be provided.
