Family Opera: Amahl and the Night Visitors
Audiences of all ages are invited to two free back-to-back matinees of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors.
The opera is one of the most frequently performed in the repertoire and the first-ever opera written for television, it premiered live on NBC December 24, 1951. Menotti's beautiful score will be played and sung by UCSC opera students and instrumentalists with special guests Jennifer Cass (harp) and Ron Miller (clarinet) with others appearing in the chamber orchestra. The shepherd’s chorus will be sung by the University Concert Choir. The 50-minute story of the imaginative child, Amahl, and his three royal visitors is sung in English.
Directed by Sheila Willey.
