About this Event
View map Free EventAudiences of all ages are invited to two free back-to-back matinee performances of Cinderella, an English translation of Viardot's Cendrillon.
Written by renowned mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot as a “salon operetta,” Cendrillon was part of a large body of mostly vocal works that she composed between 1864 and 1874. The libretto, also written by Viardot, takes a more playful view of the classic fairytale. In this version, the Prince disguises himself so that he can meet a partner with a truly generous heart who is not merely looking to marry royalty. Cinderella’s stepsisters, though selfish and misguided, aren’t so malevolent as in other tellings. Her stepfather, now a member of the nobility, is a former grocer who is mourning the loss of his dear Collette (Cinderella’s mother).
UCSC voice students perform the roles in an English translation by Rachel M. Harris.
Kylan deGhetaldi accompanies on piano.
Sheila Willey directs.
