Species on the move!

As our planet has warmed in recent decades, species have been recorded shifting their distributions around the world—upslope in mountain ranges, deeper into the oceans, and generally toward the poles. In this lecture I will review the changes we've seen in our Earth system; how ecosystems are responding; and what "species on the move" mean for nature and for people. We'll cover many examples of species on the move (birds, insects, trees, whales, fish, and more), as well as some surprising responses of biodiversity to climate change. I'll introduce some of my own research that aims to forecast these shifts into the future, and do a deep dive on fisheries as a case study of managing ecosystems in the face of climate change.
