Why publish open access?This 90-minute presentation will provide a general overview of UC open-access policy and opportunities to UCSC researchers. UCSC’s Scholarly Communication Librarian will guide attendees through current policies - including a discussion of transformative agreements with publishers and eScholarship - panel participants will discuss their experiences with open access publishing. Ample time will be left at the end for Q&A and an open discussion on the benefits, limitations,and possible improvements to current policies. REGISTER

Panelists: 

  • Martha Stuit, Scholarly Communication Librarian. Martha Stuit (she/her) provides Author Services which covers guidance and training on publishing, open access, copyright, and dissertations and theses. Martha works directly with authors on publishing, including open access, such as how to publish with UC's open access publishing agreements and discounts.
  • Kyle Parry, Assistant Professor of History of Art and Visual Culture at UC Santa Cruz. He writes about how people use and understand digital media. His forthcoming book, A Theory of Assembly: From Museums to Memes, proposes that a cultural form deserving of the name assembly has come to equal narrative and representation in its reach and influence. A second, co-edited book, Ubiquity: Photography’s Multitudes, reframes the ubiquity of photography as a political and historical fantasy. He’s working on a new book on generativity. Kyle and his co-editor were able to make their book, Ubiquity: Photography's Multitudes, open access by combining three grants.
  • Rachel Holser, Postdoctoral Scholar UC Santa Cruz  Institute of Marine Sciences 
  • Fernanda Ferreira, Professor of Psychology and Member of the Graduate Program in Linguistics at the University of California, Davis. Professor Ferreira’s research focuses on uncovering the mechanisms that allow humans to understand and generate language in real time and in cooperation with other cognitive systems. Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Society, the Cognitive Science Society, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Professor Ferreira served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General from 2006-201 and recently helped found a new, Fair Open Access journal called Glossa Psycholinguistics. Professor Ferreira is a member of the Linguistics Panel of the National Science Foundation and currently a standing member of the National Institutes of Health Study Section on Language and Communication. Established and serving as co-Editor-in-Chief of Glossa Psycholinguistics, hosted by eScholarship. 
  • Katie Fortney, Office of Scholarly Communication, California Digital LibraryProvides the UC campus libraries and their communities with educational resources and policy guidance on copyright and rights-management issues, particularly those related to the CDL’s scholarly research and publishing services via eScholarship and special collections access platforms like Calisphere and the Online Archive of California. She supports the UC open access policies through her work as part of the Office of Scholarly Communication, and maintains the UC Copyright website as part of her role on the Standing Subcommittee for Copyright Policy of SLASIAC (Systemwide Library and Scholarly Information Advisory Committee).
