“In the Next Room (or the vibrator play)” by Sarah Ruhl

Set during the late Victorian era and dawn of the electrical age, this lively comedy, directed by student Sequoia Schirmer, explores how deeply human connections matter.

The play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household. Dr. Givings uses a new invention to treat "hysteria"—an exclusively female illness with a name derived from the Greek word for "uterus." Mrs. Givings starts to become curious about of the sounds she hears when her husband is treating his patients.

Provocative, moving, and utterly charming, it is a comedy about passion, intimacy, true love, and orgasms.

"Sarah Ruhl… has written a smart, charming, iridescently funny-serious jewel… As Ruhl traces it with wit and insight, and without the slightest prurience, the birth of this new era gives rise to colorful events, astute psychological revelations and endearingly apt dialogue." – Bloomberg

"A play that's smart, delicate and very, very funny!" —New York Post
