The UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute is excited to host a cross-divisional half-day symposium designed to open up conversations about the different worldviews and values we as individuals bring to our research; define what ethics and social justice looks like for STEM fields; learn how other researchers are currently addressing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) concerns in their own collaborative projects; and brainstorm together ways that we can solve some of the workforce and research issues related to JEDI in our fields.

We invite faculty, staff, and students from across campus to join us and learn together how we can create more inclusive environments and chip away at the biases and injustices that are embedded in current scientific practice.

Tentative Schedule:
1:30-2:45pm: Interactive workshop led by Ann McCartney (UCSC) and her colleague on the Earth Biogenome Project, Sadye Paez (Rockefeller University)

3:00- 3:55pm: Fireside chats from researchers incorporating JEDI principles in human sequencing research (Karen Miga, Human Pangenome Reference Project), and biodiversity research (Merly Escalona, UCSC, California Conservation Genomics Project)

4:00- 5:00pm: Keynote by Alice Popejoy (UC Davis), in collaboration with Karen Miga's BME80G course, “Bioethics in the 21st Century."

5:00pm: Poster session that features undergraduate and graduate projects that incorporates JEDI in STEM research, accompanied by a reception with networking opportunities and a musical performance.

ALL LEVELS FROM UNDERGRAD TO FACULTY AND STAFF ARE WELCOME!
