Social Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award: Honoring Peter Bratt

The Division of Social Sciences is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2023 Social Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award, Peter Bratt.

Doors will open at 5:15 p.m.; the event begins promptly at 5:45 p.m, to honor him at an award ceremony and a public film screening of his documentary, DOLORES. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, award-winning documentary filmmaker and founder of The Representation Project, will provide opening remarks. After the film, Professor Sylvanna M. Falcón will engage in a Q&A dialogue with Peter.

Peter Bratt is a Rockefeller Fellow, a Peabody Award winner, an Emmy-nominated, award-winning film director, writer, producer, and social justice activist. He received a B.A. in Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Bratt wrote, produced, and directed DOLORES, a feature documentary about civil rights icon Dolores Huerta, that was executive-produced by legendary musician Carlos Santana. The movie debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and has won numerous awards, including a 2018 Peabody Award and a Critic’s Circle Award. Other film work includes Follow Me Home and La Mission, and he also directed the ABC network special called Corazón de América (Soul of a Nation). Peter is also project lead of The Village SF, an innovative planned housing development in San Francisco to meet the holistic needs of Native Americans.
