http://bit.ly/waterman23The American Indian Resource Center (AIRC) and the Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC) are hosting a film screening of “Waterman- Duke: Ambassador of Hawaii” with dinner, dessert and refreshments on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023 from 5:30-7:30pm in the Cervantes & Velasquez Conference Room on the 3rd Floor of the Bay Tree Building.
Throughout this event, we aim to highlight the shared experiences of our communities and to learn about Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, who is known to have popularized surfing. The Duke was also best friends with Jim Thorpe, of Sac and Fox nation, one of the most famous Native athletes. Their friendship models how our communities can build relationship with one another, and support each other. The town of Santa Cruz is also argued to be one of the first places that surfing was popularized so we hope to highlight the unique history of the town we all reside in. Food will be provided from Pono’s, one of the few Hawaiian restaurants in town.
As a heads up, attendees may have their photos taken/shared during our program. Please let one of our team members if you have any questions.
