WiSE Backyard Naturalists Challenge #2

Summer is a great time to get outside and explore nature while social distancing, so the WiSE Backyard Naturalist Challenges are back!

Join us for Challenge #2 over four days (Thursday July 30th – Sunday August 2nd) by visiting your backyard or local natural area and posting pictures of the organisms you encounter to our iNaturalist Project, “UCSC WiSE Backyard Naturalists” (link here). This time, each day is themed: birds, fungi, invertebrates, or plants! We will post an introduction to each category on our Facebook page “UCSC WiSE Naturalists Group” by a member of the WiSE community that is passionate about the day’s group of organisms. Your challenge is to upload observations of a different group on each day:

Day 1 (Thursday, July 30th): BIRDS with Christa Seidl

Day 2 (Friday, July 31st): FUNGI with Erin Aiello

Day 3 (Saturday, August 1st): INVERTEBRATES with Nikka Malakooti

Day 4 (Sunday, August 2nd): PLANTS with Julia Harenčár

At the end of the week, we’ll award prizes and give honors to those with the most documented species in each group, the most consistent participation, and for
fun categories such as devotion to certain taxa (e.g. Bird Nirds, Photo-synthesizers). Our goal is still to create a community of Backyard WiSE Naturalists, learn more about making scientific observations, and increase our appreciation for the wildlife in our backyards.

To participate, create an iNaturalist account (try https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started
for help) and join the project “UCSC WiSE Backyard Naturalists” (link here).
